Gibson’s Auctioneers & Valuers (“Gibson’s”) is proud to present an engaging selection of Australian and international art works, sculpture, photography and prints as part of the auction house’s exceptional Summer Art Collection 2018, which will be auctioned on Tuesday, 4th December.

With the auction house priding itself on a strong client relationship focus, Gibson’s senior specialists take acute care to uncover the unique story behind each piece and its owner, and importantly, how each piece will expand and fulfil the needs and desires of the buyer and their collection.

Headed by one of Australia’s leading Decorative Arts specialists, Jennifer Gibson, Gibson’s Summer Art Collection 2018 marks the Armadale auction house’s fourth sale this year, having officially opened, in June, with its widely successful inaugural auction of The Collection of the late Dr Robert Wilson.

With an interesting and thought-provoking selection of modern and contemporary pieces on offer, Gibson’s forthcoming Summer Art Collection 2018 auction offers collectors and investment buyers alike the opportunity to acquire a distinct and unusual item sure to evoke both contemplation and conversation.

Included in the sale is Lot 9, the historically significant portrait of Robert Chirnside and the Melbourne Hunt Club, 1882. Robert was the nephew of Thomas Chirnside, the well-known pastoralist and founder of Werribee Park.

Lot 9

Another historically important piece is the painting by Harry Royall, Lot 5. Titled in Carroll’s own hand ‘How I won the V.C. at Massines, Private John Carroll’ it shows Victoria Cross recipient John Carroll in action storming the German bunker and capturing the gun amid exploding shells.

Lot 5

Lot 3, an unusual painted scrimshaw horn shows, among other things, a scene of a waddy fight between two men of the Lake Hindmarsh tribe.

Lot 3

Lot 4, Hugh Sawrey’s bronze ‘The Man Who Steadies the Lead’, is a fine example of the artist’s work and a powerful representation of the iconic Australian drover, one of only twelve cast.

Lot 4

Lot 13 is Adam Cullen’s irreverent and confronting work ‘Hygienically Sealed for Your Convenience + Hygiene, 1984’. Winner of the 2000 Archibald Prize and known for painting criminals and underdogs, his canvases have sold to the likes of Elton John and Amanda Vanstone. This painting broke the artists auction record when it was sold in 2007.

Providing an overview of The Summer Art Collection 2018, Jennifer Gibson, said:

“Modern and contemporary Australian artists are well represented in this auction with works by John Coburn, David Rankin, John Beard, Lawrence Daws, Tony Tuckson, David Bromley, Matthew Johnson, Robert Doble, Jeffrey Makin and Andrew Browne.

“Works on paper and prints include some fine examples by William Dobell, Arthur Boyd, Robert Jacks, Charles Blackman and Frank Hinder. Lot 1 – ‘Children with Umbrellas’, the lyrical and beautifully composed wood block print by Eileen Mayo (1906-1994) is a fine example of the print-makers craft.

“A collection of photography adds another layer of interest to this sale and includes examples by Max Dupain, Lisa Tomasetti and Robert McFarlane as well international works from the Marilyn Monroe series by Bert Stern and arctic seascapes by Camille Seaman.”

The Summer Art Collection 2018 will be available for viewing from 30th November to 3rd December from 10am to 4pm, and on the day of the auction, Tuesday 4th December from 10am until 1pm with the auction beginning at 6pm.
