Headed by one of Australia’s leading Decorative Arts specialists, Jennifer Gibson, Gibson’s Auctioneers & Valuers (“Gibson’s”) in Armadale, Melbourne, will be conducting its first jewellery auction as part of its forthcoming Estate & Collector auction on Sunday, 14th October at 10:30am.
Gibson’s operations commenced in June with the auction house priding itself on a strong client relationship focus, with acute care taken to uncover the unique story behind each piece, its origin and its owner. With an alluring array of pieces up for sale, Gibson’s forthcoming Estate & Collector auction offers collectors and investment buyers alike the opportunity to acquire a distinct item with memorable stories behind each piece.
The Estate & Collector auction Includes some wonderful single owner collections and Gibson’s first jewellery auction. Jewellery buyers will be delighted by all that glitters with the selection of antique and modern gold and platinum pieces variously set with diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires.
Chinese works of art are centre stage with a large private collection of over 200 snuff bottles assembled over the last 30 years, including Lot 92, an 8.5cm, finely decorated inside-painted glass snuff bottle, attributed to Ding Erzhong. Also featured in this section of the sale is a private South Australian Collection of Chinese scrolls acquired by the present owners whilst living and working in Hong Kong during the 1970’s and 80’s.
The sale contains a magnificent collection of plaster casts reminiscent of the Age of the grand tour including, among others, Lot 249, a full-size model of Michelangelo’s beautifully executed Rome Pieta and a powerful figure of the Belvedere torso (Lot 248).
Lot 245 is an important and finely executed Australian silver cricketing trophy cup by Henry Young and Co., similar in form to the famous Ashes urn created at around the same time, offers collectors an opportunity to acquire a piece of Australian sporting history.
The maritime collection from a private Victorian collector includes Lot 259, a 12-bolt copper and brass diving helmet, antique ships wheels and a selection of ships lanterns and anchors.
Time pieces and pocket and wrist watches are well-represented in this auction with sought after examples by IWC SCHAFFHAUSEN, HUBLOT, Patek Philippe & Co., Longines, Waltham, Omega and an unusual Zenith pilot wristwatch.
Explaining what differentiates Gibson’s from other auction houses, Jennifer Gibson, said:
“Gibson’s is all about the collector. Our focus is on the person who forms the collection and the buyer who is creating a new one.
“Our mission is to satisfy those higher needs and desires that drive us all and allow us to indulge in a passion not clothed in the ‘everyday dusty garb’.
“Our collections do not necessarily define us but they are a reflection of who we are and what we seek. In some cases it is beauty and a certain style, in others it is functionality, but in all it is driven by a desire to stimulate our senses and fulfil our interests outside of the ordinary.”
Gibson’s Estate & Collectors auction will be available for viewing from 11th to 13th October from 10am to 4pm, with the sale to begin on Sunday, 14th October at 10:30am. A brochure ahead of the Estate & Collectors auction can be viewed here: https://www.gibsonsauctions.com.au/flipbook.
